LEGO Yugoslav Wars Minifigs: The Battle of Vukovar

Welcome back to my blog! This entry we have today is about minifigures. This time about the Yugoslav Wars. The origin of these minifigs is a diorama I planned to do about the Battle of Vukovar but I never started. Usually I create the minifigs before the diorama itself so I decided to take some photos of them and show them to you anyway because I think they are worth it. This battle was a 87 days long siege that took place in Croatia in 1991. The Yugoslavian army supported by Serb paramilitary forces attacked Croatia when this country decided to become independent from Yugoslavia. The conflict happened during the self-destruction of Yugoslavia is a very interesting topic but I won't explain it here. The minifigs here consist of Croatian soldiers and rebels and Yugoslavian army soldiers and Serb paramilitary forces. Let's start with the Croatian side.

First we have a Croatian officer (left) and a regular soldier (right). Build very fast the Croating army had light weaponry and short numbers of soldiers during 1991.

Croatian armed civilians. Paramillitary and armed civilians forming militias played an important role during this tricky war. Tried to make them look as 90s as possible.

War photographer. The inspiration and interest for this wars came from a couple of interviews I watched in a podcast with two Spanish war reporters one called Arturo Pérez-Reverte who nowadays is a worldwide known writer.

Now turn for the Yugoslav and Bosnian units. First the regular Yugoslav winter soldiers. Uniforms aren't accurate at all but they are the best I could do. Armed with hand-painted AK.

Next one is a JNA tank crewman. I used a body from TheMinifigCo and the helmet is from BrickWarriors.

Next ones are Serbian paramilitary. These troops were more organized than local militias but still weren't part of the Yugoslav Army.

And finally the Chetniks. A militia who supported the Serbs. They are known for fighting the Nazi Germany during WW2.
